Avery Dennison is seeking a dynamic individual to join the global Polymers, Adhesive and Coatings Center of Excellence (PACE) in Avery Dennison Label and Graphic Materials. The Research Principal will identify, develop and deploy new technology platforms to advance Avery Dennison's innovation strategies and provide critical expertise in pressure sensitive adhesive chemistry and applications. The successful candidate will help translate business strategy to technical needs, engage internally and externally to identify and assess new ideas, and develop fundamental understanding necessary to bring new chemistry from idea to commercial success. We are searching for someone who will offer technical leadership to PACE and AD's technology organizations in the coordination and execution of platform activities within the PACE team in collaboration with the regional R&D, operations, and business teams. We need someone who has experience engaging with cross-functional teams and is comfortable and driven to work independently towards business and organizational needs. Responsibilities:
Develop new to the industry or new to Avery Dennison technology to enable pressure sensitive adhesive, films or coatings development, including utilizing green and biodegradable polymer technologies. Act as technical expert/mentor for the organization, including within R&D and across the business. Collaborate with Avery Dennison's global community in the area of sustainable development and strategy deployment. Lead project teams doing technical platform research driven by business needs. Develop and implement comprehensive technical project plans. Determine resources, actions, and timelines for projects. Make recommendations and progress reports to R&D and business leadership. Conduct hands-on experiments and associated polymer/adhesive characterizations. Supervise, coach and mentor technicians and junior scientists. Collaborate with corporate intellectual property counsel regarding right to market, patent applications and office actions. Assist other scientists in patent activities and filings. Expand core technology through careful study of the literature, new scientific discovery, external development, and development of intellectual property. Transfer knowledge to fellow scientists via presentations, technical reports, and day-to-day interaction. Design and/or synthesize pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) or coatings Maintaining an accurate electronic lab notebook and generating technical reports. Actively participate in process safety management and employee safety programs and help to drive continuous improvement. Qualifications Required:
BS or MS with 12
years of relevant experience or PhD with 8
years of relevant experience in the field of Chemistry or Polymer Science Demonstration of high level of mastery of polymer chemistry and design understanding. Proven track record of commitment to safety culture and laboratory best practices. Preferred:
Mastery of free radical polymerization methods and practice. End user or business experience in the use of PSA's in the label, tape, or graphics industries. Working understanding of chemical and physical plastics recycling industrial processes. Proficiency in green polymer science, biodegradation, and compositiblity. Accomplished technical mentor for junior scientist and other functional partners Understanding of renewable/recyclable resources and industrial processes for recycling, or Green chemistries. Detailed knowledge of rheological characterization and analytical/applications testing of soft matter such as pressure sensitive adhesives. Demonstrated knowledge in using statistical design of experiments. Synthesis and formulation experience in complementary chemistries and technologies such as polyesters, urethanes, silicones, epoxies, hotmelt glues, and radiation curing. Proven skill in leading cross-functional teams composed of R&D, operations, commercial, and customer team members.
Salary Range:
$100K -- $150K
Minimum Qualification
